It seems like Family Intel is running ahead of schedule this week; I think I received their email a day early. This is impressive given that many of Virginia’s residents have been buried by snow and plagued by power outages. Then again, being snowed in (with power) can contribute to a sudden surge of productivity. :o)
Anyway, the book summary of the week is Raising Bookworms by Emma Walton Hamilton. Ms. Hamilton “provides strategies that will help your children get excited about reading.” I’ll have to take a peak at this summary and see what, if anything, Ms. Hamilton says about beginning readers. One thing I noticed with my older two children was that they did not really learn to read well until they discovered the love of reading. Once they began to read on their own, their reading skills took off. Now, with our 6-year old learning how to read, I’ve recently been thinking about his own skills and wondering when that magical moment will happen for him. He is certainly proud of himself when he reads the stories in his schoolbook, but I know he’ll be even prouder when he suddenly picks up a book and starts reading it just because he can.
THIS WEEK: Raising Bookworms by Emma Walton Hamilton
LAST WEEK: Boundaries with Teens by Dr. John Townsend
NEXT WEEK: Parenting a Defiant Child by Drs. Philip and Nancy Hall

Another great supplement, I truly could not have talked about the idea much better by myself.
